We have one shot. Patients are willing to trust, once, one person, the best. Every single patient, case, every single time, they trust who they think is the best person to help them through what seems a dead end. We owe it to the standard of quality to be that best, every single time. No better luck next time! That’s why we must remain dedicated to learning and improving ourselves relentlessly.

The organization of the health industry, government, hospital and the private sector alike should learn from the same model. To learn from each case and trust in their professionals to improve the quality of care instead of relying solely on politics and protocols. I am not saying that protocols don’t have their places, but there are only parts of the system, not the whole of it.

Humanity, is the keyword and humanity does not stand in protocols but in the people behind the white coat and the people surrounding those white coats. Trust more and let insecurity fades away, that’s the only way to have an inclusive system where each member can feel useful and contribute in a positive and continuous way. 

The health profession is a team effort, from the janitors to the doctors including the administrators. Everyone should be included in the effort to improve daily upon the delivery and quality of care. As a system, we should provide means and tools to each individual to measure their own performance, quality and their place in the whole system.

By assuring that everyone matters and is making a difference at their level, that’s the way to keep the team spirit in place in opposition to a job in a huge well-oiled machine. By trusting the individual, we place upon their hands the quality and improvement of care. And care is above all, human. Humanity is the key…
